Violent
crimes include rape, robbery, assault, and murder, or homicide. While most
violent crimes are state offenses, violent crimes such as international
terrorism, kidnapping, and bombings may be charged as federal crimes. The
murder of a judge, police officer, or other federal official may be considered
a federal crime.
Whether state or federal, violent crime charges
are serious matters. If you have been accused of a violent crime, you may face
a substantial prison sentence or even the death penalty, under certain
circumstances. The counsel of an experienced criminal attorney will be
essential. If you can't afford an attorney, the state is obligated to appoint
an attorney to help you free of charge.
