When pulled over by the police, it is best to handle things in a civilized manner while at the same time protecting your rights. The following basic steps provide basic guidance on how to do so.
1
Roll down your windows.
Do this so that the officer can see you clearly and is not overly suspicious of you. And if pulled over at night, it is wise to turn on your vehicle's interior dome light as well for the same reason.
2
Provide your Driver's license, registration, and insurance card.
These are the items you are required to carry with you, and providing them will show compliance on your part.
3
Inform the officer that you have been advised not to make statements.
Do this politely. Let the officer know that it is nothing personal against him or her, but that you have been advised never to speak to law enforcement without an attorney present.
4
Stick to this assertion.
The officer may ask you if you know why you were pulled over, where you are going, where you are coming from, or why you won't answer questions. Those are all questions, and the best way to avoid any additional problems is to re-advise the officer of your decision not to answer any questions. If the officer decides to issue a citation to you, that's fine. You can simply sign it and deal with it on the court date. But at least the officer won't have incriminating statements to use against you in court.
