A patent is a grant of a property right which permits the owner of the patent to exclude others from making, using, or selling the invention as claimed in the patent. There are three different types of patents available under U.S. law: (1) utility patents, (2) design patents, (3) plant patents.

Evaluate
Assess if your invention has met the requirement of novelty, utility and non-obviousness.

Prepare
Prepare the patent application to make sure it has fully disclosed your invention, including, but not limited to, prior art, detailed description of the invention, the best mode to implement the invention and has claims that cover the scope of protection.

Submit
Submit your patent application with USPTO (www.uspto.gov) and pay the application fees, along with declaration of inventors, assignment (if applicable) and power of attorney (if you have an attorney working for you).
