According to a study presented in May 2010, ICU patients who are uninsured are more likely to die than patients who have insurance.  The study found that uninsured patients receive less intense care than insured patients.

This study points to the sad reality that hospitals and physicians provide substandard care to ICU patients when the patient has no insurance - despite the universally accepted principle that all patients are to be given optimum care regardless of insurance status.
