It's a well-known fact that most insurance policies don't cover defamation, invasion of privacy, or copyright infringement claims. It's also true that legal threats against bloggers have escalated dramatically in recent years. So what's a blogger to do? Give up? Never!
1
Get Blogger's Insurance
The Media Bloggers Association has launched an education, legal advisory, and liability insurance program for bloggers. If you're a blogger, or you're interested in blogging, I highly suggest that you google MBA and check out their press release on the subject.
2
Get Informed
O.K. so I'm giving you two steps and my title suggested only one. What can I say? I want to give you as much value as possible. Once you obtain insurance you need to educate yourself on the basics of internet defamation law. There are a number of resources out that are helpful including the MBA, Citizen Media Law Project, and even my own blog.
3
Use Judgment
This is common sense. Use judgment when you post blogs on the internet. Make sure to verify your facts and sources before you write anything. As I wrote in step 2, if you educate yourself on the basics of internet defamation law you will avoid many problems.
