If you have gone through the application process for Social Security Disability payments and benefits were denied, you can apply for a reconsideration hearing. Here's what to expect at that hearing.
1
Who will be there
The reconsideration hearing is an informal hearing before an administrative law judge. The judge will probably have an administrative assistant there. You may have an attorney. There may also be a vocational expert present who will testify as to what jobs you are able to perform.
2
What they will ask you
You will be asked a series of questions. The judge may start off asking general background information, including job experience. He or she will want to know how your disability affected your ability to perform your job. You will be asked specific questions about your medical history and condition, as well as any treatments you've received or are receiving. You may also be asked about day-to-day activities and how your disability affects these.
3
Hiring an attorney
If you have been denied benefits previously and are going into the hearing stage, you may want an attorney to represent you. A social security attorney can give you peace of mind and help you navigate the process. It's free upfront -- you only pay your attorney if you win. This is called a contingency fee. If you want an attorney, find someone local and experienced in social security issues.
