TEXAS PARTNERSHIPS FOR PUBLIC SAFETY SYMPOSIUM ~ October 12-14, 2011

hosted by Sheriff Greg Hamilton, Travis County Sheriff's Office

I would like to ask that you save the dates October 12-14, 2011 for Texas’ first statewide U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) “Partnerships for Public Safety Symposium”, sponsored by the Travis County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO). This came about after discussions with ICE Assistant Director Harold Hurtt who, as the former Houston Police Department chief, understands the needs and landscape of Texas law enforcement. We thought it would be beneficial to get sheriffs and ICE representatives from across the state together so we can share thoughts with each other and learn more about how ICE works and how we can work closer to improve public safety in our communities.

This symposium will provide a unique opportunity to gain insight on the mission and priorities of ICE. The goal is to allow local ICE leadership to look through the eyes of Texas sheriffs to see the many obstacles we face when dealing with undocumented citizens and how sheriffs want to work with ICE to address public safety threats – like transnational gangs and border security.

The symposium will be held in San Antonio, Texas at the Hyatt Regency on the River Walk.   An agenda will be forwarded to you soon.  We will also be working with Bexar County Sheriff Amadeo Ortiz ~ who welcomes us to his fine city.

I know how far in advance sheriffs’ schedules fill up, so I wanted to make you aware of our plans as soon as possible. We are planning for approximately 75-100 participants, so if you and/or members from your staff (please no more than three from each department) would be able to attend, please register now.  The space will be limited to the first 100 participants who register.

Those able to attend would ideally fly/drive to the symposium on Wednesday, October 12 and we would conclude in the early afternoon Friday, October 14.

My team at TCSO is coordinating closely with ICE on the agenda to tailor it specifically to issues affecting Texas sheriffs. ICE field office leadership will be on hand to outline their priorities, answer your questions, and most importantly, listen to your advice. We expect to cover topics related to partnership like human trafficking enforcement, Secure Communities and detention standards. But we want to hear from you too.  Please let us know what other topics you would like discussed.

Thank you for your support and I hope you will be able to take advantage of this first of its kind meeting with ICE and Texas sheriffs.

Greg Hamilton

Sheriff, Travis County

See the whole sad thing for yourself. I guess since he got away with it right after the general election last time he is into teaching about it now. Sad.
