RSD definition and causes
RSD occurs when an injury fails to heal properly. As a result, the nervous system does not work as it should. This can occur after surgery, a broken bone, or related to a repetitive motion injury or spinal injury. RSD is progressive, meaning it worsens over time. Affected areas include skin, muscles, joints and bones. There are two categories of RSD: Type I and Type II, depending on whether there was nerve injury. Sometimes the cause of RSD cannot be determined.

RSD symptoms
The symptoms of RSD include intense burning pain, sweating, swelling and sensitivity to touch. It's not always easy to diagnose, because there is no test that will tell you for sure if you have the condition. Instead, a doctor will have to review your medical history and evaluate your symptoms in order to diagnose RSD. A doctor will look for changes in tissue growth, movement disorders, and changes in the sympathetic nervous system, among other things.

There is not a cure for RSD, so treatment of the condition is focused on relieving pain and maintaining motion. Doctors consider a patient's specific symptoms and pain level before prescribing treatment. Options include medication, physical therapy, nerve blocks, and surgery.
