Researchers at a University in India have created a hardware device that blocks drivers cell-phone signal virtually making their cell-phone useless while driving.

Here’s how it works. The hardware system sits above the driver seat and triggers an antenna which then jams the cell-phones signal rendering it useless to the driver. The placement and low-frequency signal the hardware gives off only blocks the drivers phone but not any of the passengers in the same vehicle.

The hardware also comes equipped with a transmitter which alerts surrounding police when the driver attempts to use the cell-phone while driving which could end up in a driving ticket.

Troubled that 20 percent of fatal road accidents with trucks and other heavy vehicles globally involve mobile phone use, researchers H. Abdul Shabeer, R. S. D. Wahidabanu and H. Abdul Zubar created the Cell phone Accident Preventer (C.A.P.) using RFID (radio-frequency identification technology).

Here in the United States, “Distracted driving is an epidemic, particularly among teens that are confident in their ability to text or talk while driving," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "Of the 5,500 people killed last year due to distracted driving, the largest proportion of fatalities occurred among young people under the age of 20."

Will this kind of technology catch on here in the United States? Will there be any consequences of this device in case of an emergency where the driver is by themselves?

Phoenix, Arizona car accidents have grown in numbers in recent years with a good portion of these auto accidents in phoenix being caused by drivers who were distracted while driving (texting or talking on their phones). It’s not just here in Arizona that these serious accident injuries occur, but across the nation where these accident numbers are climbing due to the same issue.

Do you think technology like this will work? As a car accident lawyer in phoenix, there really isn’t one way to stop those who text and drive, but a series of steps that have to be put in place in order to take control of this epidemic.
