First, you need to review any and all websites they may have running.
Second, go to the Illinois Attorney Review and Disciplinary website.
Third, check that attorney's hourly rates.
Fourth, check how many associates are in that firm.
Lastly, find out who will be handling your case.
1
Check the attorney's website
Run a google search for divorce lawyers in your COUNTY--not necessarily your specific town. Many outstanding attorneys will be missed by limiting yourself to attorneys whose office is in your local community.
Read everything there is to read about that attorney. Pay attention to any reviews that attorney may have, but remember, that attorney controls the content of their website--so read, read, read.
2
Find out what that attorney charges as an hourly rate
Generally, the longer an attorney has been practicing, the more that attorney's hourly rates will be--the higher the rate, the more you'll pay. While you're at it, find out how many other attorney's are in the office and what they're rates will be. Don't assume that because you hire Joe Attorney with 30+ years experience that he's the one that is going to be "your attorney" in the office.
3
Attorney Review and Disciplinary Committee
Go to the Illinois Attorney Review and Disciplinary Committee website and search for that attorney. Find out how many complaints have been filed against him or her. Are there any complaints pending? Have any complaints resulted in disciplinary action?
