Advice for notary publics on how to take a proper jurat.
1
Identity of Parties
The Notary Public first and foremost must positively identify the party to the document who is signing.
2
Logging the Transaction
in most states and as a matter of good practice, the notary should keep a detailed log of the nature of the document, the party to the document, its purpose, the date and the place of execution.
3
Keeping a Copy
It is good practice to retain a copy of the jurat as allowed by state law and contact information for the parties in the event that you need to contact them in the future for clarification or further verification.
