Many U.S. taxpayers can file online, free of charge. Online filing (the form automatically does the math so it significantly cuts down on errors) has the added advantage of offering refunds within 10 days for those who e-file.

You must have adjusted gross income of $56,000 or less.

Visit the IRS Website
Visit the IRS website (links below under "Additional Resources") to find a free tax filing service. Note, you'll need to access the company's site through the IRS website in order to file for free. If you go directly to a company's site, you'll end up paying the regular filing fee (usually about $20 or so). Go through the IRS web site every time you log on to your account.
