When deciding to take legal action for a Florida wrongful death, the outcome of your case is heavily dependent upon the attorney you choose to represent you. For many people, choosing and hiring legal representation especially in such a sensitive and important type of case can seem intimidating.

However, if you start out knowing what to look for and how to pick a wrongful death attorney you can choose the person who is right for you and your case.

When deciding to pursue a wrongful death claim you may only have a certain amount of time as outlined in your state’s statute of limitations. So before you hire a lawyer it is important to make sure that you are within the legal timeline to do so. Once it’s established that you have time to file a claim you can begin looking for an attorney.

Do Some Research before Hiring a Wrongful Death Attorney

The first step in choosing the right wrongful death attorney is to research. If you are interested in an attorney you see in an advertisement:

•call the local law society in your area for a reference; •ask others who may have gone through the same situation who they recommend; •do an internet search; and •look at the outcomes of similar cases and see who they used.

Once you have some idea of who you may be interested in you should narrow your list down to 2 to 3 potential attorneys and schedule an initial consultation with each of them, which should usually be free. When preparing for the consultation draft up a list of questions and concerns and bring them with you.

It may also be helpful to bring a notepad and/or a friend or family member to help you remember what was discussed. Ask them to clarify anything you do not understand. You should feel comfortable with their answers and be treated with respect.

When you visit an attorney’s office take a look at the size of the firm and the number of staff. A Florida wrongful death claim can take lots of time and dedication to be handled properly so you should also ask about typical caseload and how many people will be assigned to working on your case.

You should also take the time to ask for an estimate on how much an attorney’s services will cost. Different attorneys will bill you in different ways such as a fixed fee versus a certain percentage of your compensation.

Once you have the facts and have visited with the attorneys on your list, it is time to make a decision. Weigh the risks and benefits, review your options and make the choice you believe is in the best interest of your case.

If at some point in your legal process you become uncomfortable or unsatisfied with the quality of work your attorney is performing you may want to go back to someone you spoke with before for a second opinion.

Remember that an attorney works for you, not the other way around so it is important to pick a law firm that will support you in a difficult time and is experienced enough to win your case.
