Decrease Speed Slowly and Flash Turn SignalUpon seeing those flashing lights behind you, avoid slamming on your breaks. Turn on your turn signal and decrease your speed to at least the speed limit or slightly below. 2
Find a Safe and Convenient Place to Pull OverContinue driving with your turn signal on unless there is a sufficient shoulder for you to not block traffic, and find a place where your car and the officers car can rest comfortably without interfering with any traffic flow. If the officer changes his lights or siren as if to get your attention while you are doing this, pull over immediately where you are. 3
Roll Down Drivers Side and Passenger Side Windows, Turn On Dome LightsIf your windows are electronic, roll down both your drivers side and passenger side windows. You do not know which side the officer will want to approach. At night, turn on your overhead dome light to illuminate the inside of the vehicle. This puts the officer at ease. 4
Rest with Hands on Steering Wheel While Officer ApproachesRest your hands on the TOP of the steering wheel when the officer approaches. DO NOT move them until the officer is at your window. DO NOT try to find your license, registration, and proof of insurance after rolling down the windows. Wait until the officer has you in view and asks for the license and registration. The officer approaching the vehicle does not know if you are looking for paper work, a gun, or hiding drugs. 5
