Doctors and pharmacies are prescribing or filling prescriptions for overdoses of Acetaminophen and Tylenol with surprising frequency. There is a narrow range between the therapeutic doses of this medicine and an overdose that is toxic to the liver.
1
Combination Medications such as Darvocet, Percocet, and Vicodin contain acetaminophen as well as a narcotic.
On June 29 and 30, 2009, FDA convened a Joint Panel of the Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee, Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee, and the Anesthetic and Life Support Drugs Advisory Committee to discuss the acetaminophen hepatotoxicity epidemic.

Consumers should check the acetaminiphen content of all medications to avoid overdose
The FDA panel recommended that some of the combination medications be removed from the market and that consumers and prescribing physicians become better informed about the risk of liver failure from acetaminophen or Tylenol overdose. Consumers and physicians are not appreciating the danger of this medication. Many of these overdose cases may result in medical malpractice legal liability for doctors and pharmacies.
