Family court conciliation is a type of alternative dispute resolution. Attorneys are typically not involved. Conciliator's are typically not attorneys. Everything you say and do is reported to the Court in a recommendation. You should get advice before going to these events.
1
Keep your focus
If the dispute being conciliated is support, don't let the conciliator or the other party bring up custody or parenting time.
2
Get advice before going in.
The conciliator is also the fact-finder. He or she is supposed to be neutral but any conduct on your part can influence a decision. In many instances, the conciliator's recommendation will become an order. Get sound legal advice on the issues and relevant facts before going in.
3
Consider your personality.
If you are not typically assertive or if you have been victimized in the past by the other party, be very hesitant about going in without an attorney. Your relationship with your children will cause an emotional reaction. Take a support person - always.
