Steve Bolin, 53, and girlfriend, Sarah Wulchak, 32, got into an argument that left him with the top part of his ear missing. The two began fighting in their home while Bolin was eating a bowl of spaghetti in bed. Wulchak suddenly hopped onto her boyfriend’s back and began biting his ear. After Wulchak stopped attacking him, Bolin noticed that half of his left ear was gone. Wulchak left the home and checked into a motel.
Bolin waited sixteen hours before contacting the police because he was unsure if he wanted to press charges. He made the decision to call police after stating that he “couldn’t stand to look at his ear."
When police found Wulchak at the motel, she exclaimed that she only bit her boyfriend in self-defense to get him off of her.
According to A.R.S. § 13-3601(A), domestic violence means any act which is a dangerous crime and:
- The relationship between the victim and the defendant is one of marriage or former marriage or of persons residing or having resided in the same household.
Because Wulchak and Bolin live together, this crime would be considered domestic violence in Arizona, even though the two aren’t married.
