There are other good indicators such as trial experience, and years in practice. It is a good idea to personally meet the lawyer so you can be sure you will be comfortable working together. Ask the lawyer how many jury trials he or she has completed. If your case may be brought in federal court, ask about the lawyer's experience trying cases in federal courts.

Most lawyers charge an hourly rate. It is generally true that the best lawyers can command the highest rates. Some lawyers are good business people, and some are not. Research "alternative fee lawyers" and see if you can find qualified lawyers who will work with you to offer alternatives to the billable hour such as contingency fees, success based fees, hybrid hourly rates, and rate caps. Consider working with a smaller firm as long as the firm has lawyers that have the demonstrated skill and experience to meet your needs.
