We expect the highest standard of care from nursing homes when caring for our elderly family members. Usually the staff at these homes is very good and provides a quality setting. However neglect and abuse does happen in some nursing homes. If your loved one is abused you need to immediately contact law enforcement. Next you should consult with an experienced attorney. I have personally represented clients involved in nursing home lawsuits. One such client was placed into care with a local nursing home for only two weeks. He was diabetic and required daily blood monitoring and insulin. The staff at the home neglected to carefully check his blood sugar levels and properly administer insulin. He suffered the loss of his leg due to their negligence. We successfully sued the home and obtained a very large settlement for him. In Illinois private attorneys suing a nursing home under the Act are authorized to seek not only compensatory damages, but may seek multiple damages and attorney's fees. These cases are very complex as many depositions are required.
