1

Who must complete Form I-9?

Form I-9 is required for all employees hired after November 6, 1986, with a few minor exceptions. Independent contractors and certain rehires or casual hires are not required to complete Form I-9.

2

Which version of the form should we use?

Make sure to use the latest version of the form, which was published in March 2013. There are older versions of the form which are no longer accepted at this time.

3

When does the employee complete the form?

The employee must complete and sign Section 1 of Form I-9 after accepting the job offer and no later than the first day of employment.

4

When does the employer review the form?

The employer must review the employee's documents and complete Section 2 within three business days of the employee's first day of work. See the Form I-9 instructions for details on what to look for when examining the employee's documents.

5

What if we later find a mistake on the form?

If you find a mistake on a previously completed Form I-9, you may draw a line through the incorrect information, add the correct information to the form, and place your initials and date next to the changes.
