Federal
energy law covers chemical- and nuclear-plant safety and cleanup, environmental
protection, public health concerns, and the health and safety of energy-plant
workers. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) enforces energy law and policy.
Within the DOE, the Federal Energy Regulatory
Commission regulates transmission and sale, licenses plants, and responds to
environmental issues related to the electricity, natural gas, and oil markets.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission oversees nuclear power plants, nuclear waste,
and other uses of nuclear materials. While the agencies emphasize mediation and
settlement, workers and citizens can sue energy companies. An experienced
attorney's advice is recommended prior to undertaking a lawsuit in this specialized
area.
