Domestic
violence occurs if someone you live with is stalking you, threatening you, or
has injured, or sexually/physically assaulted you. The abuser could be an
unmarried partner, an ex-spouse or partner, someone you're dating, a child, parent,
or other relative.
Stopping domestic violence may involve
relocating to get away from the abuser. You may also get a court order
requiring the abuser to stay away. If the order is violated, call 9-1-1
immediately or the local police. Also, domestic violence lawyers can help by
arguing your case in court, referring you to counseling and shelter facilities,
and filing restraining orders.
