Retiring from a public school system; want to write a letter to my principal on issues;can he sue for slander ?

I want to write a letter to my principal stating my opinion on various issues under his leadership, especially that he is creating a hostile work environment. If I state my opinions on issues, can he sue me for slander, even though I don' t use profanity or specifically attack his character?

  1. Writing a letter to somebody cannot constitute slander. Libel and slander are two types of defamation. Libel is written defamation and slander is spoken defamation. With both libel and slander, publication of the defamatory material is required in order for somebody to have a cause of action. If you do not publish the material about the principal to other parties, there is no publication, and therefore, there is no defamation.


  2. A letter to him will not be a published statement by you so you cannot be sued for libel. Slander is something you might say so slander is not a written form of defamation.
