My wife (green card) has to stay outside of US for a while. What will be the options not to loose her green card status?

Asked over 1 year ago - Menlo Park, CA

She just completed consular process outside of US for green card and entered US and will receive physical green card soon. (She has temp visa on her passport). But due to her previous commitments (she is medical doctor and finishing her residency outside) she has to stay outside of US for a while. What are the possible options for her not to loose Green Card status? If she lost her status, can she reapply again?

Regards

Answered . She is required to maintain her U.S. residency. Avoid long stays outside the U.S. Preferably keep it shorter than 6 months. If she is expecting a long stay abroad, she should apply for a Re-entry permit before she departs the U.S. Consult with a competent immigration attorney to discuss the best approach.
