My EAD expired and my application for EAD renewal is still in process. Should I take unpaid leave until I get my new EAD?

I’m on L2 visa and currently working, My EAD expired and my application for EAD renewal is still in process. Should I inform my employer and take unpaid leave until I get my new EAD?
