How long should it take for an estate to be settles in Va? When are picuniary bequests paid out?

Asked about 1 year ago - Clinton, MD

My friend died in April 2010. She left a will, and was a resident of Virginia. Her attorney is the executor. Other than cash accounts, she had a house which finally sold in December 2012. When should we expect the estate to be settled and picuniary bequests to be paid out? (is it normal for it to take 3 years to settle an estate in virginia? my friend died in april 2010 she left a will her attorney is the executor other than cash accounts, she had a house which finally sold in december 2012 when should we expect the estate to be settled and pecuniary bequests to be paid out?)

Answered . The most important fact you note here is that the house sold in December 2012. That is obviously what held things up. VA has one of the more serious probate scenarios out there and and based on a few estates I've seen there, a reasonable sized estate in VA always needs probate court approval of costs before bequests are paid out. Have you asked the attorney for a better idea of the schedule and when any court dates are? That should answer your question.
