Green card

My current status is H1b and my employment base green card is in process. My feyoncy is a US citizen and we are planning to do court marriage here, so she can apply for my greencard. I would like to ask while my petition for greencard is in process can I/we leave US or not , orI/ we have to wait till I get a green card and then we can leave country.
