even though an employer is not obligated to give severance pay to someone fired,what if someone was laid off ,along with many others due to the recession. And others that were let go at due to lay offs,were paid a severance pay?

Severance pay is not legally required.

If severance pay was not given on the basis of race, gender, unionization, etc., you may have a claim. Also, if your company was taken over, you might have a claim. Else, it is a voluntary payment, a gift, without entitlement (unless you have a contract or collective bargaining agreement to the contrary).
