The non-profit that owns my building is being sued by the Los Angeles City Attorney's office representing the Health Department for repeated and gross violations of CA. health codes. This case is in court now and started before I went to court on an unlawful detainer suit for refusal to pay rent for uninhabitable premises in July 2009. Unable to afford an attorney, I represented myself and not surprisingly lost. I have filed an appeal but the 5 day notice to vacate and lockout came last week and I'm now in a shelter.

For such a complicated matter an attorney is always advised. You were at a disadvantage trying to defend the matter yourself, and indeed probably were not able to best take advantage of the pending HD violations matter.
You need a lawyer. Perhaps check the LA Legal Aid. http://www.lafla.org/contact.php Check with a California lawyer in your locale to discuss more of the details. Good luck to you. God bless.
