We need to move to Chicago asap and need to save every penny. I remembered that we had a mediation proceeding saying if we couldn't make payments we could leave. But, we're caught up now and I don't know if that still takes into affect. Either way, if that weren't the case can I do this? Or are there other ways without having to pay much more?

The answer lies in what your lease says. I would have an attorney review it. If you are not able to get out of it without penalty, speak to the landlord and see what you can do. Perhaps you can show it or assign it so that the penalty is waived or removed.
