can an insurance company renig " for lack of a better word" on settlement

i received a check for insurance to settle a prorated claim. 2 days after i cash the check they cancel it to issue a new check, of less amount, forcing me to pay back the remainder plus return check fees. theese checks have printed right on the stub ( DO NOT MAIL) - Is this your question?
