Non Profit

Everyday we see non profits whether churches or education or other standing up for something or someone: whether or not they are specifically lobbyist or politically designated: are there any cases where for example AARP has been found to be using their name and member fees for a purpose other than their non profit designation?
What can consumers do to obtain information to verify if the non profit has voting members and if all have to VOTE and agree before the non profit makes an announcement that they either support a LEGISLATIVE BILL or LAW?
Construction, chamber of commerce, education, professional, religious, makr statements they support a variety of laws or bills: yet in one of my examples I DID NOT VOTE NO WOULD I for What the non profit claimed publically! Help

sell inherited house or not?

I'm nearly to the point of selling my grandmother's house in NY.
The price would bring in around $475K to me.
I plan to pay off another rental I have financed, and possibly my current home (just refinanced). I owe $355k between them, so it would cover it.
I’m active duty Air Force and a FL resident…my wife is a NY resident who hasn’t had to pay taxes since she married me…the house is in my name only.
Questions:
- Do you know if I'd have to pay NY tax on the home sale (it was inherited but estate tax was paid)?
- Isn't there a cost threshold where there would be no fed tax on the sale?...around $375K?
- Am I tax-exempted if I roll the profit straight into paying on/off another mortgage(s)?
- Any reason you can think of NOT to sell?...the neighborhood has held it's prices

can a non profit offer services such as painting and receive donations greater than $500, without a contractors license?

I'm raising funds for a church and we'd thought about offering handyman services to generate funds. However I know that the state of Ca doesn't allow any work to be done for more than $500 without a contractors license. We won't be doing anything more than minor repairs but is it illegal if someone wants to give us more than that? It is a fundraiser? I just want things done properly while staying out of gray areas.

What are the legal issues involved in setting up a donation fund / fundraiser for a cancer patient?

I'm thinking of setting up a donation fund for my sister diagnosed with breast cancer. What legal issues do I need to be aware of? Does she need to claim the donations as income on her tax return? Does this affect / conflict with any financial assistance available? Thank you

Our non profit charitable 501C3 donated most of our donation income to another 501C3. Is there any problem with this?

We donated the majority of our income (which was all donations to our organization) to another 501c3 which has a similar mission. Is there any restriction on giving the funds we raised to another 501c3 charitable org.?

I want to hold a fundraiser for a youth program. The group I belong to is not "non-profit" status. Can I still do this?

The organization I would be holding the fundraiser for is a youth program sponsored by the Police Department. They rely on grants. These grants do not look encouraging this year and we wanted to hold a fundraiser for the program.

Pre-incorporation cost and business structure question.

I have been preparing to launch my web application (a website) for 2 years. I spent about $50,000 USD on developing and testing the website excluding my salary.

What can I do with these pre-incorporation costs? To reflect this loss on the financial statements, do I have to buy a shelf company that is older than 2 years? Or Do I just incorporate a new one and include this already incurred cost?

My question regarding the business structure is:
I am planning to incorporate an LLC as a holding company and incorporate an operating company (INC.) for this website as I am expecting equity investments, and I plan to add more operating companies. Is it true that dividend to the parent company that wholly owns the operating company is tax-free?
