Discover more than one option.

Most patients diagnosed with this disease should have a variety of options available to them. Surgery and radiation therapy should be part of the discussion in most situations. While some patients are often frustrated that there may not be a standard course of action, the key is for both patients and providers to focus on choosing the best therapy for the individual, based on the disease, the potential side-effects, and patient preferences.

2

Consider active surveillance.

In some cases, the best course of action is active surveillance, or "watchful waiting." Many cases of prostate cancer may be so slowly progressive that the patient may best be served by avoiding invasive procedures. Be sure to discuss active surveillance with your doctor to see if it's right for you.

3

Take time to be informed.

The vast majority of patients don't need to rush into a decision. Taking time to be informed can help individuals make a decision that they'll be most comfortable with in the long run. Be sure to get a multi-disciplinary assessment (more than one type of specialist) before committing to a course of action.
