Anaheim, the 10th largest city in California, started out in the mid 1800’s as a colony founded by German wine makers. The name derives from “Ana” of the Santa Ana River nearby and “heim” the German word for home. So, Anaheim became their “home by the river.”
In the 1950’s, Walt Disney choose Anaheim to build Disneyland, because the city in Orange County reminded him of his Missouri hometown. Since then, tourism has replaced agriculture as one of the main industries in the region.
