In 1921, eight Chicago White Sox players were acquitted of charges of intentionally losing the 1919 World Series, but nonetheless received a lifetime ban from professional baseball.

One of the players was “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, one of the game’s best hitters, who later recanted his confession and protested his innocence , to no avail.
