We've compiled a list of questions to ask when you visit your potential attorneys:
- Are you currently in good standing with this state's bar association?
- Have you ever received a disciplinary sanction?
- What are your primary areas of practice?
- After you explain your case: What do you think of my case? Do you think I can be successful in pursuing this issue? If yes, why?
- Have you handled similar cases? If yes, how many, and what was the outcome?
- Can I speak to a former client that you represented in a similar case? Note: Sometimes this may not be possible, due to confidentiality issues.
- Do you see any unique legal issues with my case?
- Can you give me a summary of the legal process my case will take, from start to finish?
- Do you have time to handle my case?
- Do you charge for an initial consultation? If yes, what is your fee?
- Can you give me a timeline for how my case will progress?
- Do you think I have a good chance at a successful resolution to my case?
- How long do you think it will take to resolve my case?
- Do you foresee any possible problems or issues with my case? If there are problems, will I have to pay more?
- What will you need to get started on my case?
- How much will you charge to handle my case?
- Will other lawyers or assistants or be helping out on my case? Will I be charged extra for their time?
- What kind of out-of-pocket expenses can I expect?
- Do I pay you in advance? How much lead time will you give when I need to advance funds to you?
- When you disburse funds, will you give me a receipt?
- How often will you bill me, and what forms of payment do you accept?
- If I have questions about my case, how should I contact you?
- How long will it take you to return my calls?
- If you are not available when I call, who should I speak with?
- How will you keep me informed about progress in my case? How often?
- Do you send me copies of all correspondence related to my case? Do you charge for this?
- Can you explain your engagement letter to me?
- Any other questions you may have-topics to consider include billing, office hours, any concerns specific to your case, etc.
