Can the IRS still attempt to collect back taxes from 2003: My employer just recieved a notice of levy for tax period ending 12-31 -2003
they also levied money from my vacation fund ( union benifits)
Can the IRS do this, I just read there is a ten year statute on IRS collections
They say i owe them $29,789.00!

Jessica’s answer: The IRS typically has 10 years to collect income tax liability before the statute of limitations on collection expires. In most cases, once the statute of limitations on collections expires the IRS has no power to collect the tax liability from you. This 10 year periods starts to run when the tax was assessed. So, if your 2003 tax return was filed by the filing deadline on 4/15/2004 (and no changes were made to the assessment after that date), then the statute of limitations on collections would have expired on 4/15/2014. However, late returns, amended returns, audit assessments, and additional assessments can cause the 10 year time period to start later than the original filing deadline for the year in question.

Am I responsible to pay a IRS debt if my name is not on it?: I am in the process of selling my house and found out that there is lien on the property. My deceased husband owed money to the IRS. My name is not on this debt.

Jessica’s answer: The answer to this questions depends on many factors:

- Were both names on the title of the property at initial purchase?
- Did the property remain in both names during your husband's lifetime?
- Were marital or separate funds used to purchase the property?
- When was the tax liability assessed?
- How much equity is in the property?

Due to the complexity of this question, I recommend that you talk to an attorney in detail about the facts of your case.

I owe money to Mn. federal need a phone number to call a lawyer: I owe 12,000 dollars

Jessica’s answer: Your options to deal with this debt would include payment plans (pay off your debt over time), currently not collectible status (hold on collections based on a proved inability to pay) and offer in compromise (settlement of your debt for a lesser amount. All of these options would protect you from wage and bank levy action.

I would recommend contacting an experienced tax attorney to discuss the options above.
