Is it legal for the apartment complex to sell or give out your social security number?: We have lived in this apartment for 6 months and today recieved a letter from a company seeking to sign us up to let them represent us in finding the electric company with the lowest rates. This letter had a contract for us to sign containing full name, address, DOB and full social security number ( not the standard xxx-xx-1234 ). The phone number listed as our phone was that of the office of our apartment complex. I looked up the companies website and found out they offer " rewards " to complex managers who give them leads. Logical deduction is that our apartment complex management disclosed the social security number. We get mail for other units in our mailbox on a daily basis. Had this been delivered to another mailbox by accident who knows what would have happened. Is this legal?

Clifford's answer: If Mr. Wayson's advice does not work, look for a lawyer in your area (start here on Avvo) that handles identity theft issues and have them write a letter. Even if the letter costs you a small amount, that is much better than years of problems and credit card debts from a stolen identity. I hope this information helps. Clifford's answer: Mr. Wayson's advice, as usual, is spot on. You need to hire an attorneyto defend yourself as soon as possible - to defend you and to show you are serious about fighting this. The fcat that SSA hasa not found anything wrong certainly helps your cause, but you will want to talk with an attorney to see if the standards under Indiana law differ. I hope this information helps. Clifford's answer: My colleague has given a good response. Be aware that many SSA offices are supposed to use the $1010 figure as the figure for proof of of whether you are able to work or not, but it is often a lesser amount that is also considered. When you get down to only $500 or $600 per month, that is considered evidence that you are not able to work a fulltime competitive job - what SSA calls substantial gainful activity. To get SS benefits you must have been off work, or can prove you will be off work for 12 months in a row. Otherwise, there is no SS eligibility for disability benfits. There may also be short-term disability or long-term disability benefits you can apply for through your company - check with your human resources persosn. The disability standard for STD and LTD benefits vary, and often are different from the requirements of Social Security. I hope this information helps.
