After graduating Cum Laude from Willamette Law, Breckan opened a practice in Salem, Oregon, and provided services in a variety of practice areas, including criminal law where as a new attorney, she negotiated a favorable plea deal for a client in a very high profile criminal case. She continued to practice remotely from Washington after relocating in 2008.
Since her admission to practice in Washington in 2009, she has represented clients in almost all types of personal injury cases including motor vehicle accidents, nursing home negligence, wrongful death, and premises liability cases. She has also advocated for workers’ compensation claimants, including those involving RCW 51.32.185 firefighter presumptive occupational disease claims. Breckan also obtained experience on the defense side of civil litigation in Washington, which increased her effectiveness as an advocate for injured people by providing key knowledge in how defense counsel and insurance companies handle cases.
Her better half, Ryan, was stationed at Ft. Lewis prior to his taking an honorable discharge so they could focus both on his career in the private sector and Breckan’s practice. During his most recent deployment, Breckan focused her energies on being a part of the military community, which included providing pro bono services to local soldiers and their families, including assisting in estate planning and family law matters. She continues to support the military community, and has expanded her volunteerism into the civilian world through several venues. Breckan is also currently the volunteer attorney advisor to the Yelm Food Cooperative, a quickly expanding venture in Yelm, Washington.
On a personal note, Breckan is originally from Wasilla, Alaska where her passion for helping people was instilled in her from a family committed to public service and volunteerism. Her grandmother, May Carter, was the first US Commissioner in Alaska, and her grandfather, Pat Carter, began the first program in that area to help reform adolescents who were struggling with behavioral issues. Her mother, Colleen Scott, remains an active part of the community as a certified CASA volunteer and through service on the Library Needs Committee for the City of Wasilla. When she is able to visit Alaska, Breckan enjoys spending time with her mother, sister (Jocelyn Scott-Williams), and six nieces and nephews. Both Breckan and her mother have been active in the horse community since Breckan was a child, an interest which continues to this day. Breckan and Ryan currently reside in Yelm, Washington with their three horses, german shepherd, and very large cat.
“I observed that, in a lot of law offices, it seemed as though the attorneys were either passionate and disorganized, or organized yet ambivalent. I have always wanted to be an advocate for people and am elated to provide the competency, care, and commitment that clients deserve from their advocate. That is the foundation for effective advocacy: waking up every day loving what you do, and having the discipline to do it efficiently.” -On why she decided to open a practice.

I endorse this lawyer. Breckan was a good attorney when I met her five years ago and she has continued to improve her advocacy skills each year. She has taken on causes that others rejected -- and helped right wrongs in the process. She has a good heart and good mind. She is an advocate who knows you change the world -- one case at a time.
