About Me

D. Hiep Truong is a partner at Manning & Kass et al. LLP. He is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, where he earned a double major Bachelor of Arts degree in the area of Psychology and Sociology in 1994. Mr. Truong received his law degree from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1999. Mr. Truong is admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court, United States District Court for the Northern District of California and the Ninth Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals. He has assisted and counseled California Employers on conformance with employment and labor laws during litigation. Just as importantly, he has helped numerous employers avoid litigation.

At Manning & Kass, he continues to serve the interests of California Employers, both large and small.

While in law school, Mr. Truong authored numerous articles, which have been published in various national law journals. Some of his writings include: "Daubert and Judicial Review: How Does An Administrative Agency Distinguish Valid Science from Junk Science?" (Published in the University of Akron Law Review); "Encouraging Foreign Direct Investment in Vietnam: Economic Reform, Protection Against Expropriation, and International Arbitration." (Published in the Journal of Transnational Law and Policy; Volume 8:1); and the "Illegal Immigration Reform and Responsibility Act of 1996: A Cost-Effective Measure for U.S. Citizens Or A Punishment for Immigrants Seeking the American Dream? (Published in the DePaul Digest of International Law; Vol. 3; Spring 1997)." All of these articles can be found on-line at Westlaw and Lexis-Nexis.

During Mr. Truong's first year of law school, he clerked as an extern in the chambers of the Hon. A. Andrew Hauk, a Federal District Judge in the Central District of California. Mr. Truong was responsible for researching and writing the dispositive motions for the Monday Calendar.During Mr. Truong's second and third year at law school, he worked for the Office of the United States Attorney's Office both in the Eastern and Northern District of California. At the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Eastern District, he worked on the appeal of a complex insurance fraud pyramid scheme. At the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Northern District, he worked on the federal prosecution of a criminal copyright/trade secrets case involving a Fortune 500 Silicon Valley company. After law school, Mr. Truong was a Certified Law Clerk in the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, where he conducted preliminary hearings before the Court.

Mr. Truong has also engaged in pro bono work. He is a panel member of attorneys at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and has provided consultation on various areas of intellectual property law. He is also a volunteer Moot Court judge at Stanford Law School (2002 to 2009) and University of San Francisco School of Law (2007 to 2009).

He currently volunteers as a Moot Court Judge at University of California, Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law and volunteered as a moot court judge for Santa Clara University School of Law in 2009. In 2012, he volunteered for the ABA Moot Court Finals in San Francisco.

He has also volunteered as a Scholarship Committee Member for the Incentives and Awards Program (IAP) at the University of California at Berkeley. IAP's mission statement is as follows: "The Incentive Awards Program (IAP) provides a $32,000 scholarship award, and student support services to low-income students who have demonstrated leadership potential, high academics, and a commitment to serve others. IAP reaches out to first-generation college students who have overcome great socioeconomic disadvantages through its partnerships with 49 Northern California high schools, and 22 Los Angeles high schools through its Pre-Collegiate Academy."

He has also volunteered as an Alumni of the Regents' & Chancellor's Scholars Association (RCSA) at UC Berkeley, where he has provided guidance to current UCB RCSA students regarding a career in law. At SCU, he was a recipient of the B.T Collins Public Interest Scholarship, California Bar Foundation Scholarship, and the American Jurisprudence/Witkin Award for Academic Excellence in Administrative Law.

At Manning & Kass, Ellrod, Ramirez, Trester LLP, Mr. Truong has successfully arbitrated and mediated several cases. His achievements garnered him recognition as a California “Rising Star” by Law & Politics and Los Angeles Magazine in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 - a distinction limited to only 2.5 percent of attorneys in California. When not in the office, Mr. Truong enjoys running, motorcycle riding (Honda RC-51), playing tennis, photography, and writing. As a Cal Bear Backer, he has season football tickets in the QQ section at Memorial Stadium. He can also be found on the ground after falling off his mountain bike on a quiet, secluded hillside.
