    Hired attorney

My wife and I used the service of Mr. Randall Hicks for the adoption of my adult daughter, who was out of the country during the entire process. We started in December 2014 and successfully completed the adoption by February 2015.
Mr. Hicks was very competent in the matter of adoption; he was fast, efficient and reasonable with his fees (we did shop around).
We have no hesitation to recommend Mr. Hicks services to anybody with adoption concerns.

We are currently in the finalization period of adopting our son, but Randy has been with us on this journey for the past few years. In the beginning stages, he was clear and direct with the adoption information and advice we needed. When we had been waiting for awhile for a birth mother to pick us, he even came up with some outside solutions to finding a birth mother on our own. Once we did find a birth mom, Randy was the first person that we and the birth mom called and he was extremely helpful in getting her in contact with an attorney in her state. Our birth mom was impressed with the help Randy gave directly to her. We hope to be finalized in a few months but we would definitely give anyone Randy's name if they need an adoption attorney and if we choose to do this again, we will for sure be calling him back.

We first tried to adopt through a well-regarded adoption agency, but, other than the valuable counseling, found their process expensive and quite disappointing. Then we decided to try the private attorney route, and discovered Randall Hicks. Before we chose to proceed, he provided a frank evaluation of our strengths and weaknesses in terms of being chosen by a birth mother for placement. His rates were reasonable and transparent. The feedback he gave to us on our profile was quite valuable. Importantly, he always seemed honest, straightforward, and knowledgable. We were ultimately successful in adopting a newborn. There were some bumps along the road to adoption, including the baby unexpectedly developing a serious medical issue. However, Randy's legal advice allowed us to feel that we understood all of the options and help available.

Would I still rate Randall Hicks so highly if we had not been successful in our adopting our child? Yes, I think we would. He delivered the services we paid for in a professional manner. As ours is an open adoption where we are in frequent contact with the birth mother, I do know that she does not regret turning to Randall Hicks for help either.

My husband and I worked with Randy on two private adoptions upon the recommendation of two other families who had worked with him. We particularly like that he takes care to make sure that the potential birthmothers are really ready to make the decision to give up a child for adoption, that their decision is not hasty or uninformed or under pressure. He also did not pressure us to choose him, but spoke well of one of the agencies we were also considering.
During our second adoption, we had more questions about how to interact with and help support the birthmother, as the situation was somewhat more complicated the second time around, and he gave good advice that helped guide us.
He is experienced, knowledgeable, easy to work with, and trustworthy.

We interviewed several adoption attorneys before selecting Randy Hicks. We decided to work with Randy due to his many years of experience in California adoptions, his contacts in the Southern California community, his conservative approach to the adoption process, and the clear and direct information and advice he provided in our initial visit. We also valued his transparent payment structure, his ability to communicate with us, and his process to only work with a limited number of adoptive couples at one time. Ultimately we located our birth mother through an agency, but Randy helped us with all the legal paperwork associated with the adoption. Randy was always responsive when possible birth mother situations arose (either brought to us by Randy or through other parties that we brought to him) to answer our questions and provide advice. He worked in partnership with our agency social workers to quickly and efficiently process initial and final adoption paperwork, and we never needed to chase or push the process along. We never had to worry about the legal details having Randy taking care of that aspect of the process. This allowed us to focus on our daughter and really enjoy our new blessing. We would highly recommend Randy to others for adoption needs as he is very professional, straightforward, and effective while showing the utmost respect for all of the involved parties.

Randall Hicks did a stepparent adoption for us. He did an excellent job and did it fast. Very fair pricing. And when we went to court for the final hearing, it was obvious the judge knew and liked him a lot, which made us feel very confident.

Randy was an excellent attorney for us. We could not have been happier. He took us from the beginning, - finding a birth mother - to all the legal steps - to completing the adoption in court. What impressed us the most was that we'd each used lawyers in past years, myself for a divorce and my wife for a bankruptcy. Neither experience was very good. But Randy was very personal, and even when we called him on the weekends we could always reach him. His fees were very fair and I had the feeling he did a lot of work he didn't even charge us for, a big difference from being nickel and dimed by past lawyers. I guess most important, he really, really seems to know everything about adoption.

My husband and I have adopted three children. We hired Mr. Hicks at one time. Once our money was paid, we could not get in touch with him personally. His secretary at the time was very rude and abbrasive. We moved on to someone else and had a successful and positive adoption experience, but lost the entire money we had paid for Mr. Hicks adoption services. I do no recommend this attorney.

Randall Bruce Hicks’s response: “I strive to return every call promptly so I don't feel this individual's statement is accurate. In fact, my voice mail includes an option to connect immediately to my personal cell phone, which I can normally answer even on weekends and evenings. I can't imagine an attorney being more accessible and I think I go way beyond the norm compared to other attorneys. I can understand a client's disappointment - if this person was even ever actually a client - if they are not successful in being selected by a birth mother. However, I make sure each prospective client knows that an adoption cannot be guaranteed, as it is the birth mother who considers many equally qualified and deserving adoptive families, and makes her determination based upon her own personal values and desires. In independent adoption the birth mother selects the adoptive family, not the attorney, not an adoption agency. I also tell every prospective client (and it is common sense), that most birth mothers tend to favor adoptive families that do not yet have children, or if they do, they have a small number of children. When an adoptive family has existing children, that is clearly the most wonderful aspect of their lives, but in the adoption world it can make it more difficult to adopt. The reality is most birth mothers want to "create" a family for someone, not "enlarge" an existing family. And with each existing child it becomes statistically more difficult. So a family with three children will often have a much more difficult time being selected than a childless couple, or a couple with only one child. I make sure every prospective client knows this reality, but sometimes they think these statistics will not apply to them, and are upset when they become reality.”

Randy assisted us with the adoption of our daughter last year. He was very nice, worked great with our birth mother, and kept us informed all the way through. He made the complicated stuff about the birth father go very smoothly. We found him through one of the books he wrote on adoption. His fees were very fair, and the federal tax credit actually paid for our whole adoption!
