I was disciplined by the California State Bar in 1992 because I paid a referral fee to another attorney for referring a case. California State Bar rules a person paying a referral fee must 1. Get client's consent in writing 2. State terms of the referral fee 3. Referral fee paid must be added to the client's fee. All of the above were complied with, except while the client consented verbally, it was not obtained in writing. It was clearly a technical and not substantive violation. less
