    Hired attorney

I was referred to Deborah from another lawyer. I paid the referring lawyer the fee to file bankruptcy. After I made an appointment with Deborah, the fee was sent to her. I believed and trusted that Deborah could help me. It has been over a year and nothing has been done. Every time I called to find out the status of my bankruptcy case, Deborah would tell me she wanted to wait for the right trustee was available to hear my case. My case has never gone to a trustee and is still open. The last time I called her to find out my status, I was told I needed to pay an extra $1,000 to have her continue with my case. She has not been forthcoming in handling my case. She simply took my money and did not give me the service I paid for and did not help me. I believe I should be refunded the fee I paid upfront for a service I never received.

Deborah F Bowinski’s response: “In spite of the fact that this review was posted anonymously I suspect I know who this client is, and this is a very incomplete and inaccurate statement of what took place. Unfortunately, this person had the misfortune of hiring two other attorneys before she was ever introduced to me. My understanding is that the first office never did anything and the second lawyer retired in mid-representation. This client had greatly underestimated the market value of her home at the time I was retained. There were very real issues related to values of assets and an attempt to protect his person's home from being sold or from under her as a part of the bankruptcy process. For a long while this person was adamant about not wanting to file a chapter 13 case, which is what was required in order to be certain her home would be protected. She ultimately agreed, entered into a new retainer agreement for a chapter 13 case with no additional monies exchanged. Many months ago she decided not to file for bankruptcy after all and was going to pursue another avenue in dealing with her debts. At that time I returned all of her original documents and provided a detailed statement of time and expenses invested into her matter from the time i was first retained until the time she terminated representation. I had been paid a total of $800.00 and had accumulated billable fees and costs in excess of $2000.00 (fora which she was never billed) during that time period. Two weeks ago I was contacted again by this FORMER client and asked what it would take to reopen her matter. In response to that inquiry I replied that because of the 8 months that had passed since she had terminated my services, and because we would still be looking at a chapter 13 filing, that I would require $1000.00 (installment payments were offered) in order to retain my services anew. Ordinarily, the up front fee for a new client filing a chapter 13 case is significantly higher than that amount. I am baffled by this review. When she terminated representation this former client said the following in her email message to me: "I appreciate all you have done for me and it has been a pleasure knowing you. I hope that if this path is wrong that I can call on you to get me or of a sticky mess, of course, i know with a fee. :-) Thank you!"”

    Consulted attorney

Ms. Bowinski was very knowledgeable and generous with her time and suggestions. She answered all my questions and was very informative with what I need to make decisions which will work in my best interests. She seemed genuine and honest and counseled me without influence. Should I ultimately decide to go forward with filing Chapter 7, she is definitely my choice.

She has been a God send! With all of the costs incurred in fighting my ex's bankruptcy, I was left with nothing. I have a fraud judgement that he was attempting to file bankruptcy on. He stole my life savings and destroyed my credit. He now owes me $96,000, but has fought me every step of the way. Without the advice I was given (for free) I never would have made it through this. True professional, and someone who genuinely cares.
