I do NOT recommend this attorney. We hired Ms.Cavazos for my brothers case. We were from Del Rio we thought hiring an attorney from out of town we wouldn't have to deal with the attorneys and judges from Del Rio being friends. She was well known in Del Rio, and I understand that they all work in the same environment and she practices over there but she was too buddy buddy with the prosecutors that were prosecuting my brother. She charged my mom a total of 7500.00, I know that some will think that is a small amount of money for an attorney but keep in mind that a single mother and unemployed at the time . We had several court hearings and Ms.Cavazos was on her cell phone the whole time. The judge would be speaking to my brother and She was off on the side just on the phone, very unprofessional. My brother would say the few times that she would visit him that she acted as his prosecutor instead of his attorney. She would ask my brother for statements and would call him a liar and for him to tell the truth. She would always sit on the side with the agents instead of his . Last time I checked your attorney is supposed to be on your side and represent you. She would not want to give us or brother any information. My brother told her to give us any information regarding his case and she would not. She would state that he hired her not us. Yet my mom was the one paying her and so my brother wrote my mother as his power of attorney and she told my mother that didn't matter if my brother wrote her as the power of attorney she would not give us any information. My mom finished paying her off in about 6 to 7 months with payments never missed yet she never helped us. She told my brother to plea to a lesser charge he did and they came back with a more stuff after the plea and she did not try and fight it. She just said that's what happens yet when she told him to plea she was so certain about it. Her website states she was a prosecutor for 10 years that should've been our RED FLAG. She knows how they work . My brother tried to communicate with her yet she never would return a call and he wrote to her multiple times. Her receptionist Brittney as well would always give us the run around. It got to the point that my brother wrote to the judge about his ineffective counsel the judge never responded he even wrote to the State Bar of Texas about her and they said that his letter stating everything she did , did not prove she was ineffective. Im guessing she found out about him writing to the State Bar and she was of course mad now , cut all communication with him. My brother wrote to the JUDGE 3 TIMES until they finally had a hearing. She told the judge that he wrote the state bar Complaining about her. That was not having that. She was mad because he reported her yet she was NOT doing her job. My brother in the beginning would ask a lot of questions of course any person who is locked up awaiting trial would have questions. Ms. Cavazos told him that he asked too many questions. My brother would of course in jail read about laws and other sorts along his case . She told my mom my brother was not bright he needed to just stop asking all the question. Since when is asking your attorney questions wrong. That's what any person is to do.During the time of the hearing regarding her ineffective counseling . My brother stated to the judge yes he knows he doesn't know the law but he needs someone to help him and she wasn't doing her job. They then assigned my brother a court appointed attorney. This all happened with in 7 to 8 months . Did she ever return our money? no! It must be nice to get paid $7,500 from your client for you not to do a thing. My brothers new attorney did more for him in the three months that he was his attorney then she did . Attorney will always state on their website only what some good comments state about them. This is first hand experience. I DO NOT recommend her at all.
Ms. Cavazos gets results. period. I was so impressed with the way she handled herself, the jury, judge, criminal defense attorneys, bailiff, etc. She had a way of being nice and professional but FIERCE and authoritative. Her work ethic is incredible and I felt she truly cared about me and winning my case. You can tell she absolutely loves what she does. Winning my case was NOT promising to say the least. We won. I highly recommend Ms. Cavazos. She knows the law and she absolutely knows what she's doing. When a jury member gives a positive review, one must take notice! I highly recommend her services.
I recently served on a jury... and Sylvia Cavazos was one of the defending attorney's. She was thoroughly prepared for this case and so professional in handling everyone in the courtroom whether it was those from the DA's office, the judge or her client. She was unerringly polite but she cut straight to the heart of the situation when questioning the arresting officer or any others connected to the case. Always courteous and never rude she quickly persuaded those she questioned to agree with her on all points. I hope I never need a criminal defense attorney but IF I find myself in that position, I would contact Ms. Cavazos first. It's very obvious she loves the Law and she's excellent at her chosen profession.
She was at her best BEFORE I signed her contract and paid her a large amount of money.
Beyond that point, sadly, she was pretty awful.
Did not return calls with 48 hours, or at all.
Refused to schedule an appointment to discuss my case.
She was too busy and I had to be ready to talk when she decided to call me.
Very strange, too. Periodically, she'd speak a kind of "valley girl" speak that was difficult to follow and less than confidence inspiring. Lots of "It was like" and "he was like" and "then like" blah, blah, blah. Unprofessional and inarticulate, to say the least.
Filed NO motions, on my behalf, until I asked her about motions.
Then she filed one.
I cut her loose after a few months and just before my next court date.
My new attorney had my case dismissed, for lack of evidence, and the entire event expunged from my record.
He did that in, at most, 15 minutes of conferring with the prosecutor.
Was my new lawyer that good??
Sure. he's a good lawyer and he's competent.
Why was it so easy for him?
There was NO evidence, no case against me and I was innocent.
It was pretty low hanging fruit.
But, Sylvia Cavazos couldn't even pick the "low hanging fruit".
I'd be very, very concerned for anyone who any one who chose Sylvia Cavazzos as a defense lawyer.
Ms. Cavazos represented my son from May 2010- Nov 2010. This was a very stressful and difficult time for our family. Our son has never been in trouble yet alone done nothing bad. So when we were told what he was being accused of, it blew us all away. I knew my son would never do what they were accusing him of. We were all torn apart, especially my son. It was so hard to enroll him in an alternative school, I was crying so bad, the counslor had to calm me down. He was so unhappy and depressed and I hated to see him like that. Ms. Cavazos was referred to us by a family friend. When we went to meet with her it was like God had sent us an angel, she was so respectful and caring. She sat there so professional and reassured my son that everything was going to be okay, and for him to keep his head held high. I could tell she was going to do all she could do to prove my son innocent. She would either call us or email me to give me updates. She would even call when she was out of town, no matter what question I had she always got back to me with an answer. It took six months, it felt longer, however Ms. Cavazos came through and proved my son innocent. I thank god for bringing her to us everyday, she is a wonderful person, we were truely blessed to have her represent our son. Thank you Ms. Cavazos!
Ms. Cavazos is a very experienced and dedicated attorney that will
focus on the immediacy of her client’s issues. The outcome of her
client’s cases is her number one priority. She is very determined and
will always be proactive towards her cases. She is punctual and
sympathetic. Her work ethic is great; she has a clear understanding of
the state of urgency of her clients. Her communication skills are
very astute and her bilingual capabilities increase her tenacity. Her
office customer service is fantastic, and her retainer fees are very
fair. Having seen Ms. Cavazos work in the court room I can say that
she is very smart and fierce. I would definitely want her
representing me or my family.
Ms. Cavazos represented my juvenile daughter in 2010 and I will never be able to thank her to the extent she deserves. The judicial process that my daughter was involved in was played out over 18 months, but In every crisis that came along, Ms. Cavazos was totally ahead of the curve. At the detention center, she was able to access my daughter and reassure her, even when I wasn't able to. By the time it got to court, she had excellent relationships with everybody involved, including the clerks, baliffs, district attorneys and the judges.
During this whole process, Ms. Cavazos had an optimistic, confident and professional manner. She communicated in a way that showed respect and concern for my daughter and when it was all over, Ms. Cavazos brought us closer together. She had the right perspective, and never let us forget that it was an unfortunate thing that happened, but that we would get through it and learn and grow from it. Ms. Cavazos truly cared for my daughter, and she continued to inquire about her even after her case was resolved.
As for the cost, she was very reasonable, even honest! I would definitely recommend her.
