    Hired Attorney

    Amazing attorney

First, I went online to write a review of Matt Cohen so other parents struggling with their children's schools can hear about the relief I have in life because of the incredible work Matt did on my son's behalf. I was surprised to see a couple of the other reviews. Matt was so smart about the pieces of my son's case and I will feel grateful always for his expertise and professionalism. My son's life is forever changed.

    Helpful, honest and effective

Matt was great to work with form the beginning. He provided really useful (and honest) feedback in our first meeting with him. He was realistic, had practical suggestions and really cared. His staff also worked with us and they were supportive and really knew the system. While we had more contact with his staff, we could talk to him when we needed to. He also reached out to us at key points. We had trouble with our school in the past and we were afraid we would have a big fight or would have to move, but things have really gotten back on track with the firm's help.

Worth considering as a special education attorney

Overall it was a good experience. We were able to get what we wanted for our daughter. Communication with Mat was difficult but our advocate was great, very responsive, and for the most part she did all the work. Once we got to talk with Matt (he is very rarely available) he spent a lot of time with us and was very knowledgable. I would consider using him again, but I'd check out other options, too, including just using the advocate alone.

    Go elsewhere

My experience was awful. Mr. Cohen might be an expert in his field but working with him is impossible. His office staff is rude and not helpful when I call. He is very unprofessional and inaccessible. He's always running late and does not seem prepared for phone calls. I mainly worked with his advocate and it wasn't until we went to mediation that I realized she knew more about the case than Mr. Cohen. It seemed like he drew out the case just so he could make more money. My bill was over $3000 even before we went to the first meeting and not much was even done up to that point other than talking to my son's therapists which he charged a lot of money to do. He then had me work with a different attorney in the office who I found to be very abrupt and did not seem to know what she was talking about. Even one of my son's therapists made a comment about her attitude after a conversation they had and after hearing about my experience she recommended a different attorney. The new attorney quickly helped me get things back on track with the school and looking back I cannot believe all the time and money we wasted with Mr. Cohen.

    A terrific Special Ed lawyer

Matt Cohen represented my wife and I and our daughter in a four and half year litigation with our school district and did a superb job. The district was very difficult--mediation failed, we won the first administrative hearing, they won the appeal hearing, then we went to federal court and the district ultimately agreed to a huge settlement after we received very favorable rulings from the judge. All along the way, we found Mr. Cohen to be very accessible at all times, very understanding of the anguish we were going through, very knowledgeable of the law, and very skillful in the way he managed the case. We could not have asked for a better lawyer.

Shouldn't be an law advocate for kids

We spent 10,000 with Matt. Then we got a new lawyer and we never understood why we weren't getting any results before, we just thought that's how it works: with Matt, we would get a 2 minute phone call, 2 minutes before he was to present as our lawyer, he didn't do much or say much and wouldn't remember any details about something he's been working on for a good while. (Come on, at least have your paralegal summerize before you call!, That is LAZY). We would get a few short emails, very little accomplished on our case and boom massive bill. With our new lawyer; he's accomplished more than Matt has in less than a tenth of the time. He doesn't charge a hundred dollars for a one sentence pointless unsolicited email or anything like Matt did.

    Unprofessional, lazy.

I hired this attorney assuming he was an expert on disability laws.
Please do no hire this attorney. It was for our family a huge loss of money. While he sits in his grand office overlooking Lake Michigan he had the nerve to question my finances and then raised his hourly price when he blatantly asked how much I pay for my daughter's special Ed tutor.
