When I was 12 years old, I used to hold mock trials in my parents' basement.
It’s really weird, I know. My friends and I would literally spend hours arguing about made-up fact patterns. Usually, we couldn’t find enough kids to play along, so it would just be two lawyers and a judge – a little like family court today. My brother (who went to college at Caltech – one of the nation’s best science schools) used to tell me that I was the nerd.
People say that I don’t seem like the typical lawyer. That’s a compliment, I guess. The truth is that I am as comfortable in a coffee shop or cooking class as I am in a courtroom. I like to read – a lot. Don’t tell anyone, but I like romance novels. Yeah. Yeah. I know . . .
Exercise and physical fitness are also important to me. This past winter, my wife and I both finished Tony Horton’s new P90X3 extreme fitness program. Never in my life have I been so sore for so long.
Professionally, I have served as a court-appointed guardian ad litem for children at risk for abuse or neglect in Hennepin County. I have been an Adjunct Professor at the Minnesota School of Business and was a member of the Warren E. Burger Inn of Court in St. Paul, Minnesota.
In 2008, I argued (and won) the case of Beardsley v. Garcia before the Minnesota Supreme Court. In 2010, I was featured on the front page of Minnesota Lawyer and articles were written about me in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Wisconsin Law Journal, and elsewhere.
