About Me

The founder of his self-named law firm with branches in Wauwatosa and Monona, Wisconsin, Steven P. Cotter focuses primarily on bankruptcy,* including helping consumers file for Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 protection or relief under the Wisconsin Chapter 12B debt repayment plan. In addition, his practice extends to helping clients avoid foreclosure through negotiating a modification, filing for bankruptcy or defending a foreclosure action in court.

Mr. Cotter also takes on family law cases involving divorce, paternity matters, guardianships, and child custody or support disputes, and he has successfully represented criminal defense clients against charges ranging from OWI to robbery. He is dedicated to helping families obtain affordable legal assistance in matters pertaining to any of his practice areas.

In 2005, Mr. Cotter obtained a bachelor's degree in finance and economics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison before earning his law degree from the same university's law school. During this time, Mr. Cotter distinguished himself from his peers by working on criminal appeals for the Wisconsin Court of Appeals. He also clerked at the Waukesha County Circuit Court's family court division, an experience that furnished him with insight into how the court system works. Prior to opening his own firm in 2010, he assisted Fortune 500 clients with commercial and residential foreclosures as an associate at another firm.

A member of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, Mr. Cotter assists clients in the greater Milwaukee and Madison areas, including Waukesha and Dane counties. He is licensed to practice law before all state courts and the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin.
