  • Can a federal judge have a pretrial without me being present?

Judge Nugent conducted a pretrial and set a trial date without me being there

It is not uncommon for a pretrial conference or status conference, especially if the defendant is detained. These types of conferences are used to determine the status of discovery exchange as well as any negotiations for potential resolutions of the case. A motion can be filed with the court if the defendant wants to be present for the conferences, but it's not standard practice.
