Tom grew up in McLean, Virginia and received a B.S. in Business, with a major in Economics, from Virginia Tech in 2001. The following fall, Tom began his legal studies at the Florida State University College of Law, where he received his Juris Doctorate in 2004. While in law school, Tom clerked with the State of Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation and the Florida Justice Association.
Upon Graduation, Tom worked in Tallahassee, Florida as an Assistant General Counsel for the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. In that role, Tom represented the Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering by prosecuting violations of law, handling appellate cases, and providing general legal advice to the Division.
In 2006, Tom relocated to the Emerald Coast and joined Matthews & Hawkins, P.A., focusing his practice on civil litigation and criminal defense. Of note, in 2008, Tom and Dana presented at the 2008 Land Use Law conference, in Panama City, Florida, on the topic of Beach Rights.
In 2008, Tom moved to Alaska where he served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Alaskan Native village of Bethel. While in Alaska, Tom represented the State of Alaska in thousands of criminal matters including: DUI, assault, sexual assault, possession and distribution of controlled substances, and murder. As an Assistant District Attorney, Tom handled numerous jury trials.
After four years in the Alaskan Bush, Tom returned to the Emerald Coast and re-joined Matthews Jones & Hawkins, LLP, where Tom maintains a general civil litigation practice.
Tom lives in Walton County with his wife, daughter, and three dogs
