Matthew attended North Carolina State University and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts in History and from the University of Alabama School of Law in 2006 with a Juris Doctorate. He is a partner at Gottholm, Welborn and Benton, PLLC since the firm’s inception in 2011, and was a partner at The Law Offices of Benton & Welborn, PLLC from 2006 until 2011. Matthew practices primarily in the areas of criminal, business, and personal injury, and serves clients out of offices in Statesville and Taylorsville North Carolina. He is a member of the North Carolina, Iredell County and Alexander County Bars. Matthew is currently serving as Vice President of Judicial District 22A, encompassing Iredell and Alexander Counties. He also serves as chairman of the Iredell County Indigent Defense Committee.
Matthew was born January 20, 1980. He is the son of Terry and Janice Benton and grew up in eastern Wilkes County on a tobacco and cattle farm. Matthew and his wife Kelly now reside in Mooresville, NC. Kelly is a 2004 and 2005 graduate of the University of Mississippi, attaining her Bachelor of Science and Masters of Accountancy. She is a CPA licensed in Tennessee and North Carolina, and is employed in Charlotte, NC.
Matthew spends most of his time outside of work cheering on the Alabama Crimson Tide and NC State Wolfpack. He also enjoys BBQing, and is a member of his Father-in-Law’s competition barbecue team, The Fabulous Faultliners, competing in both the Memphis Barbeque Network and Kansas City Barbecue Society contests.
